In 2013, Pedro Romero embarked on a life-changing journey that would reshape his and his family’s life. As a seasoned project manager with 25 years of experience and an MBA from Texas A&M University, Pedro was ready for a new challenge.
“I was working down in Colombia on an assignment as an engineering manager when Aramco first contacted me, and I immediately saw this as a unique opportunity,” Pedro shares.
A few months later while vacationing in Orlando, Pedro received an offer to work in Saudi Arabia. “I was at the pool when I got the call from Aramco, so I went to the resort’s office and borrowed their printer. I signed the offer and emailed it back,” he adds.
“At the time, we didn’t know anything about the country, so it was a tough decision to make”, he recalls. Yet, the extensive support from Aramco’s recruitment team, who explained the pension plan, bonuses, educational programs, and other benefits, made the decision more manageable. The decision, though initially intimidating, would open the doors to an enriching experience both professionally and personally.
Living in the Kingdom
Living in Saudi Arabia has proven to be one of the best decisions Pedro has ever made. The company’s commitment to making employees feel at home is evident in the vast array of modern amenities available for the community. “The country is very safe, and you have all these amenities. You have everything here,” he emphasizes. The area boasts top-notch hospitals, restaurants, museums, parks, and stadiums, ensuring that expatriates never feel out of place.
The infrastructure enhancements in the Kingdom over the years have also significantly improved the quality of life. He notes the convenience of superstores that rival those back in the States and the ease of travel within the city, where it rarely takes more than 20 minutes to get anywhere.
The Perks of Life as an Aramco Expat
Financial freedom and flexibility and generous allowances from Aramco have further enhanced their quality of life. The company provides subsidized housing services and rental allowances, allowing employees to live comfortably in affordable company-operated communities or in local neighborhoods. Pedro and his wife reside in a new and affordable apartment building, enjoying the benefits of increased disposable income.
When their daughter was younger, they leveraged the company’s educational allowance for her to attend boarding school in Leysin American School in Switzerland, and later college, enriching her experience as a student.
Travel is another valued aspect of their expatriate life. Aramco’s generous vacation policies have allowed Pedro’s family to explore the world, from Santorini and Barcelona to the French Riviera and Croatia. They also return to Texas annually to reconnect with friends and family. Last year, a trip around Italy organized by their church group was a highlight, and domestic travel within the Kingdom has also been worthwhile due to the improved roads and infrastructure. “They have done a tremendous job streamlining the immigration process too, people can drive over to Bahrain for dinner if they want,” he says.
A Vibrant Community
Fast forward to today, Pedro is part of Aramco’s Capital Programs under the Controller’s Organization, working on global capital funding to support projects, including on new technologies like advanced fuels. “Every company project throughout the world, we review it and advice our management on matters related to the corporate business plans, capital programs and funding decisions,” he adds.
However, it’s the friendships Pedro and his wife have formed that truly define their experience. They have immersed themselves in the community, participating in various social groups, athletic programs, church activities, and frequent gatherings with friends. Their diverse circle includes Nigerian and Pakistani friends who often host cultural gatherings filled with delightful food and enriching conversations. Pedro also enjoys going to soccer, softball, and cricket matches, often tailgating with friends who have children and watching soccer clinics hosted by top European teams. “We are always busy,” he says with a smile.
Reflecting on his journey, Pedro shares, “You can find work-life balance here. You have all the amenities you need, more financial flexibility, and you can make new friends.”
What started as a short-term stint has transformed into a fulfilling life plan. “I came here with the mindset to work for five to seven years, but soon I realized this has become my home and I plan to retire here,” he concludes.
Pedro’s story is a testament to the enriching experience as an Aramco expat—a journey marked by professional growth, world-class amenities, and lasting friendships.
